Wed 14th March @ 1pm Cultúrlann McAdam Ó Fiaich

A new public artwork dedicated to the workers at Belfast’s famous Markets will be unveiled by John Toal – BBC Radio Ulster presenter. A new public artwork at the Cultúrlann dedicated to a unique group of people who migrated from the shores of Carlingford Lough and became a powerhouse of entrepreneurship in the city in the early 1800’s. ‘The Fadgies’ were native Irish speakers who sold just about anything in the Smithfield and St Geroge’s Markets of Victorian Belfast and were actually given their nickname by the people of Belfast! Aisling Ghéar have created a special show about ‘The Fadgies’, written by local actor Nuala Ní Neill which has been a very popular item in Féile’s August programme and was also part of the Belfast Arts Weekender – 2 packed weekends of free events across the city funded by Belfast City Council. ‘We’ve worked closely with our partners on the Arts Programme at USDT, local artist Lucy Turner and the Cumann Óige na bhFál/Falls Rd Youth Club to help put together ideas for a final design, it will be great to see something on the road dedicated to this remarkable generation of people. They made a huge contribution to the economy and also helped to create the city’s first Urban Gaeltacht’ Don McCamphill, Aisling Ghéar. As always, we gratefully acknowledge support from our Principal Funders, Arts Council for NI and Foras na Gaeilge
